People do not purchase products.

People purchase decisions they can justify.

This is the foundation of the Decision Narrative.

Whenever a person considers making a purchase, changing a behavior, adopting a new tool, or investing in a solution, they begin constructing a narrative that helps them determine whether moving forward is the right choice.

This process happens consciously and subconsciously.

The larger the decision, the more important the narrative becomes.

Every Decision Requires Justification

A customer evaluating a $5 coffee may not spend much time thinking about it.

A customer evaluating a $50,000 vehicle may spend weeks thinking about it.

A company evaluating a $500,000 software implementation may spend months thinking about it.

Why?

Because larger decisions carry greater consequences.

The more risk involved, the stronger the decision narrative must become.

Questions begin to emerge:

  • Is this the right choice?
  • Why now?
  • Can I trust this solution?
  • Is there a better alternative?
  • Can I justify the cost?
  • What happens if I make the wrong decision?

The answers to these questions form the Decision Narrative.

Timing Matters

Many problems exist long before decisions are made.

A person may want a new vehicle for years.

A company may want new software for months.

A homeowner may want to renovate a room for a decade.

The problem may exist.

The desire may exist.

But the timing is not yet right.

This is why timing is one of the most important variables within the Decision Narrative.

People constantly evaluate:

Should I make this decision now?

Not:

Is this a good product?

A product can be excellent and still fail to generate action if the timing is wrong.

Emotional and Logical Forces

Many people believe decisions are primarily logical.

NARR Theory suggests otherwise.

Most decisions contain both emotional and logical components.

The emotional side asks:

  • How will this make me feel?
  • How will others perceive me?
  • Does this align with my identity?
  • Will this improve my lifestyle?
  • Will this reduce stress?

The logical side asks:

  • Can I afford it?
  • Is the return worth the cost?
  • What are the risks?
  • How does it compare to alternatives?

Both forces work together.

For example:

I want this product.

is emotional.

But it is too expensive right now.

is logical.

The decision narrative is the negotiation between these forces.

Decision Narratives in Business

The Decision Narrative becomes increasingly important in B2B environments.

A business buyer is rarely purchasing solely for themselves.

They often need to justify the decision to:

  • Leadership
  • Finance
  • Procurement
  • Operations
  • IT
  • Other stakeholders

As a result, the narrative becomes more complex.

The product is no longer being evaluated on features alone.

The buyer must build a convincing story around why the decision makes sense.

This is why trust, credibility, proof, and reputation become so important in enterprise markets.

AI and the Future of Decision Narratives

Historically, people built decision narratives through:

  • Friends
  • Colleagues
  • Reviews
  • Search engines
  • Industry experts

Today, AI is becoming another participant in the process.

People increasingly ask:

  • What is the best CRM?
  • What software should I use?
  • Which platform is most reliable?
  • What solution fits my needs?

As AI becomes more integrated into everyday workflows, products that consistently appear during these conversations gain an advantage.

Not because AI is making the decision.

But because AI is becoming part of the Decision Narrative.

Why It Matters

The goal is not simply to build a product.

The goal is to understand the narrative customers must construct before they are willing to act.

Every purchase is a story.

Every investment is a story.

Every commitment is a story.

The companies that understand these stories are often better positioned to influence decisions, build trust, and become part of the narratives that ultimately drive action.

Understanding those stories is the purpose of the Decision Narrative.
